Who We Work With

  • When working with children and teens (ages 6-18 yrs.), we recognize that they exist within a broader system, influenced by and influencing their everyday lives. Our approach is dedicated to fostering genuine change and growth for the individuals we work with. To achieve this, we engage with those who have a significant impact on a child’s life, collaborating with our clients as needed.

In most instances, we encourage parents to join counselling sessions for their child at the beginning, end, or both. We also will hold some “just for parents” sessions along the way while we treat your child’s issues, including an online parent intake session with you prior to meeting your child. We strongly believe in supporting parents to comprehend their child's experiences and in creating a home environment that nurtures and reinforces what is essential for your child's growth and achievement of their treatment goals.

  • We work primarily with your child/teen on their own, with parents joining in for the beginning or end. However, with your and your child’s consent, we may structure some sessions, when deemed therapeutically beneficial, as follows:

    Parent-Child session

    Parents only session

    Sibling session

    Family session

When your child comes to sessions at our clinic, we will typically invite you to come in with them, especially the first session. We discuss treatment goals all together. Our expert clinicians begin the process of connecting with your child, helping them to identify what issues they would like help with, and together setting achievable goals.

Your therapist will help guide the successful achievement of treatment goals by identifying a treatment schedule that will help everyone to feel successful.

In subsequent sessions, we may invite your child and yourself to describe how progress is going towards treatment goals, how your child is feeling, identifying both successes and challenges since the last session. We often begin sessions with a brief game of the child’s choice (if desired), in which we can work on rapport-building, as well as assessment and treatment of social skills, perspective-taking, decision-making and problem solving skills, cognitive flexibility or thought patterns. Further work towards goals can be done through discussion, visually supported instruction, art, play or sand tray therapy, roleplay, etc. We learn about your child and how they express, process and learn best and use flexible approaches that match their needs.

This plan may include specific goals, collaborative sessions, and an estimated timeframe for achieving them. • While our clinic strives to accommodate clients' busy schedules, we do require that clients attend appointments during the day, as most of our appointments are scheduled during school hours. We do have limited availability in the evening; however, it's required that clients can also attend daytime appointments. We understand that some parents may have concerns about their child missing school, and we encourage them to discuss appropriate times to be away with their child's teacher. At this time, we are not offering weekend appointments.
